Q. Please tell us about the research that you’re conducting and how it affects the cystinosis community. How will this research benefit those who live with cystinosis?
A. Rickets is a debilitating symptom of the nephropathic cystinosis. Having extensive experience in bone diseases, I have proposed to investigate the causes of rickets in nephropathic cystinosis. Contrary to its appearance, bone is a dynamic tissue that is subject to a continuous remodeling process under hormonal control.
Many questions need to be answered. Can cystine accumulation affect bone cell activities? Does cystinotic bone affect the function of other organs? Which drugs have beneficial effects on cystinotic bone? By understanding the mechanisms and factors that are dysregulated in the cystinotic bone, our purpose is to identify the therapeutic targets and the efficient drugs for improving the quality of life of patients with cystinosis.
Q. What drew you to this profession?
A. My dream was to study human sciences. I was deeply impressed by molecular biology. I was curious to know how a single mutation can cause disease. I also wanted to do something for people with chronic diseases. For these reasons I decided to study biological science and then receive my PhD degree in human genetics.
Q. If you could have any super power, what would it be and why would you choose it?
A. I would like to have many super-powers that would change the present and the future of our planet. In particular, I would like to have the power to clean up the world from millions of tons of plastic waste in just one day.
Q. Do you have children? How many?
A. No, I don’t have children.
Q. Do you have a pet – what kind of pet and what is the pet’s name?
A. No, I don’t have a pet. I love dogs and cats but I am away from home too long and I cannot take care of pets.

A. My favorite flavor of ice cream is chocolate. I love strong dark chocolate.
